Monserrate Palace is the Sintra attraction that does not draw the queues of the town's better-known palaces: an 1858 Mughal-Gothic fantasy, long and low with three domes, built for Sir Francis Cook to designs by James Knowles and fusing Mughal, Moorish and Gothic-revival motifs. Inside, the surprise is the central gallery running the length of the building, an arcaded corridor of white carved plaster arabesques that opens into the domed music room and the octagonal dining room, with a great India-inspired atrium at the centre.
