Queluz National Palace is Portugal's answer to Versailles: a long pink-and-white Rococo palace begun in 1747 as a summer retreat for Pedro, younger son of João V, and expanded into a full royal residence over four decades by architects Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Robillion. It is the most complete Rococo ensemble in Portugal, wrapped around courtyards with formal parterres, box hedges, lead statuary imported from England and the azulejo-lined Canal dos Azulejos where the royal family once took boat rides. Visitors come for the interior route, far more intact than most expect: the mirrored, gilded Throne Room with its chandeliers and painted ceiling, the Music Room, the Ambassadors' Hall with its chequerboard marble floor and the small circular Dom Quixote Room where Pedro IV was born and died. Queen Maria I spent her later years here, and after the 1794 fire at Ajuda the palace became the seat of the royal family. Today it hosts state banquets, the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art keeps its horses in the neighbouring Royal Riding Arena, and the palace kitchen is a restaurant. Everything sits on a human scale, easy to see without exhaustion.
