São Jorge Castle is the fortress on Lisbon's highest hill, the citadel of al-Ushbuna when the city was Moorish. Its eleven towers, battlements and excavated foundations show Iron Age, Roman, Visigothic and Moorish layers, and Afonso Henriques took it in 1147 after a four-month siege. Later it became the royal Alcáçova, where Vasco da Gama was received in 1499. The 1755 earthquake wrecked much of it, and a heavy restoration in 1938-40 shaped what visitors climb today. People come for the walk along the walls and the wide belvedere over Baixa, the Tagus and the 25 de Abril bridge, with peacocks and umbrella pines on the garden terraces. The Tower of Ulysses holds a camera obscura that projects a live moving image of the city onto a white bowl, included in the ticket. The archaeological area displays objects from the 7th century onwards.
