Question 5

Is Lisbon walkable?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it is a hill city, not a flat one — Baixa is level, and everything around it is not. Baixa to Chiado is five minutes but includes a climb or the Elevador de Santa Justa; Baixa to Castelo de São Jorge is about 20 minutes uphill through Alfama. Belém is 6 km west and needs the 15E tram, around 25 minutes from Praça da Figueira. The funiculars — Glória to Bairro Alto, Bica to Cais do Sodré, Lavra to Campo Mártires da Pátria — exist precisely because the slopes defeat most people, and they are covered by a 24-hour Carris pass at roughly €7. Wear shoes with grip: the calçada portuguesa pavement is slick when wet.

Question 6

Should I stay overnight in Sintra or visit the palaces as a day trip from Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

Day-trip from Lisbon unless you want to see three or more palaces, in which case one night in Sintra is worth it. The train from Rossio takes about 40 minutes and costs around €2.40 each way, so a 08:30 departure gets you to Pena Palace ahead of the coach groups. Staying in Sintra itself costs €100–170 for a mid-range double and buys you the historic centre after 6pm, when the day crowds have gone and Quinta da Regaleira’s grounds are empty. Two nights lets you add Monserrate, Cabo da Roca and Mafra’s palace with its library and six carillons without rushing. If you are basing yourself outside the city for the heritage sites, Óbidos and its walled centre and Queluz on the Sintra line are the other two that reward an overnight.

Question 7

What is the best area to stay in Lisbon for a first visit?

Accepted Answer

Baixa or Chiado, because both are flat, central and within 15 minutes' walk of Rossio, Praça do Comércio and the Baixa-Chiado metro. Baixa is slightly cheaper, at roughly €150–230 for a four-star double in shoulder season, and puts you on the grid where the trams and metro converge. Chiado costs €30–60 more per night but is quieter after midnight and closer to Bairro Alto’s bars without being inside them. If you want the castle-hill atmosphere instead, Alfama and Graça are more memorable and cheaper at €90–140, with stairs as the price. Avoid booking Bairro Alto itself unless you plan to be out until 2am.

Question 8

What is the cheapest month to visit Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

February is the cheapest, with four-star doubles in Baixa often at €90–130 and hostel beds around €22. January is close behind, apart from the first few days of the month. Both are mild by northern European standards — around 15°C by day — but you should expect rain and short daylight. The upside is that Castelo de São Jorge, Jerónimos and Pena Palace have no queues, and Sintra restaurants take walk-ins. Avoid mid-November: Web Summit at the Altice Arena makes it one of the most expensive weeks of the year.

Question 9

How many nights do you need in Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

Four nights minimum, five or six if Sintra matters to you. Two full days cover the centre and Belém, and Sintra needs an entire day on its own — the train from Rossio takes about 40 minutes each way and Pena Palace alone absorbs two to three hours with the walk up. A fifth night lets you add Cascais on the Cais do Sodré line, or Queluz and Mafra. Under three nights, you will see Baixa and one viewpoint and little else. Weekend breaks of two nights are common but leave no room for the palaces.
