Question 5

Do I need a car in Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

No, and in the centre a car is a genuine nuisance — hotel parking runs €18–25 a night and Alfama, Mouraria and Bairro Alto have streets no wider than a car door. Trains handle the classic day trips: Sintra from Rossio in about 40 minutes, Cascais and Estoril from Cais do Sodré in 33–40 minutes, Queluz-Belas on the Sintra line. Buses from Campo Grande and Sete Rios reach Mafra in about an hour and Óbidos in around 75 minutes. A car only pays off if you are touring the Serra da Arrábida, Setúbal and the Costa da Caparica, where services are sparse. If you do hire one, pick it up on the day you leave the city, not on arrival.

Question 6

Is Lisbon better for families or couples?

Accepted Answer

It works for both, but the areas differ. Couples do well in Chiado, Príncipe Real and Alfama, where the appeal is small guesthouses, viewpoints and fado rooms holding 30–40 people. Families are usually better in Parque das Nações — flat, modern, next to the Oceanário and about 20 minutes from Baixa on the red line — or in Belém, where the monuments and the riverside park are all on one level. Family rooms and cots are much easier to find in four-star hotels on Avenida da Liberdade and in Parque das Nações than in converted Alfama townhouses with no lift. Expect around €200–280 for a family room in high season.

Question 7

What should I book early for a Lisbon trip?

Accepted Answer

Pena Palace timed entry slots first — the morning windows in Sintra sell out several days ahead from June to September, and your train time should follow the ticket, not the other way round. Then hotels for mid-November if your dates touch Web Summit week, and for 12–13 June, when Santo António fills Alfama, Mouraria and Graça. Fado houses in Alfama and Mouraria take reservations and the rooms are small, so book two or three days out. Quinta da Regaleira and Castelo de São Jorge, at about €15, can normally be bought on the day outside July and August. New Year’s Eve at Terreiro do Paço also tightens rooms from around 27 December.

Question 8

What is a typical nightly hotel rate in Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

A mid-range four-star double in Baixa, Chiado or Cais do Sodré typically runs €150–230 a night in May, September and October. Guesthouses in Alfama, Graça and Mouraria sit around €80–140, and five-star rooms on Avenida da Liberdade or in Lapa start near €300 and often reach €450–500 in June. January and February can take 30–40% off those figures. Remember to add the municipal tourist tax of €4 per person per night, capped at seven nights, which is usually collected at the hotel rather than included in the rate.

Question 9

Is Lisbon walkable?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it is a hill city, not a flat one — Baixa is level, and everything around it is not. Baixa to Chiado is five minutes but includes a climb or the Elevador de Santa Justa; Baixa to Castelo de São Jorge is about 20 minutes uphill through Alfama. Belém is 6 km west and needs the 15E tram, around 25 minutes from Praça da Figueira. The funiculars — Glória to Bairro Alto, Bica to Cais do Sodré, Lavra to Campo Mártires da Pátria — exist precisely because the slopes defeat most people, and they are covered by a 24-hour Carris pass at roughly €7. Wear shoes with grip: the calçada portuguesa pavement is slick when wet.
